The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has cautioned politicians against exploiting religious and ethnic sentiments for political gain ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, gave the warning in a statement issued to mark this year’s Eid-el-Maulud celebration, while felicitating Muslim faithful across the country.
Okoh said politicians should avoid actions capable of widening religious and ethnic divisions, stressing that political contests would come and go, but the bonds that unite Nigerians must be preserved.
He said Eid-el-Maulud, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on values including mercy, justice, compassion for the vulnerable, honesty and peaceful coexistence.
According to him, these values are particularly important at a time Nigerians are facing economic difficulties and insecurity.
The CAN president urged the Federal Government and other leaders to move beyond promises and take concrete steps to improve the lives of citizens, particularly through better security and economic relief.
«“Nigerians need greater security, economic relief and leadership that puts their welfare first,” Okoh said.»
He added that the performance of political leaders should be judged by tangible improvements in the lives of citizens rather than campaign promises.
As the country prepares for the 2027 elections, Okoh appealed to politicians to resist the temptation to use religion or ethnicity as tools for securing votes.
He also called on Christians and Muslims to reject efforts by politicians and other individuals to create divisions between the two faith communities.
According to him, both religious groups have a shared responsibility to protect their communities, support vulnerable Nigerians and promote peace.
While expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future, the CAN president said hope must be accompanied by responsible leadership, good citizenship and justice.
He urged Nigerians to use the Eid-el-Maulud celebration to renew their commitment to mercy, peace and compassion and to work towards building a country where every citizen can live with dignity and hope.
Okoh wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and blessed Eid-el-Maulud celebration and prayed for peace and progress across Nigeria.
