The Nigerian military has relocated the tactical headquarters of the Joint Security Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), from Jos to Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State following a recent surge in violence in the area.

The development was announced on Wednesday by the Commander of Operation Enduring Peace and General Officer Commanding, 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Williams Maxwell Dangana.

The relocation followed a series of security breaches in Mangu, including the recent attack on Bin-Per community in Kombun District, where more than 25 people were reportedly killed.

Dangana, while addressing troops in Mangu, said the decision to move the tactical headquarters was aimed at bringing the military command closer to affected communities and improving its ability to monitor developments and respond quickly to emerging threats.

He said the military had also reinforced the operation with additional personnel, equipment and other logistical resources.

According to him, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, had provided the necessary support and logistics for the troops to effectively carry out the operation.

Dangana said the military’s presence in Mangu was not merely symbolic, stressing that additional manpower and operational resources had been deployed to confront the security challenges confronting the area.

He also announced the commencement of Operation Hard Nut, a new military operation designed to dismantle armed groups, clear hostile elements from affected communities and restore peace in Mangu and neighbouring areas.

The commander assured residents that troops would maintain a sustained presence in the area until the security situation improves and residents are able to move freely, farm and conduct their businesses without fear.

The latest military deployment comes amid renewed concerns over killings and displacement in parts of Plateau State, with security agencies under pressure to prevent further attacks and reprisal violence.
