The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State.
In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that suspected hired thugs blocked Obi’s convoy and prevented him from accessing Yelwata community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
The party further alleged that the group was led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and was armed with dangerous weapons.
According to the NDC, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9am with the intention of visiting victims and families affected by the killings.
Obi was quoted as saying, “I arrived in Benue this morning at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting the victims and families affected by the horrific killings in Yelwata. Unfortunately, we were stopped from proceeding to the community by thugs chanting, ‘Peter Obi, go back.’”
The presidential candidate said his visit was not politically motivated but intended to enable him mourn with the affected families, listen to their concerns and express solidarity with them.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity during a moment of unimaginable pain,” Obi said.
He called for unity and cautioned against actions capable of deepening divisions at a time when the country should be focused on protecting lives and preventing further violence.
The NDC said it was particularly concerned that a visit aimed at offering condolences and discussing ways to prevent future tragedies was allegedly obstructed.
The party maintained that residents of Benue and Nigerians across the country deserved to live, travel and farm without fear, while urging governments to make the protection of human life a priority.
Although Obi was unable to access Yelwata, the party said its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the wider community.
The NDC also called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify and prosecute those responsible, and ensure the safety of citizens and political leaders visiting communities affected by violence.
The party vowed not to be deterred, saying it would continue to advocate what it described as the government’s fundamental responsibility to protect the lives of Nigerians.
