Relief swept through Oyo State on Friday as all the pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area have been rescued by security agencies after spending several weeks in captivity.
The development was announced in a brief statement which read: “Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies.”
Although details of the rescue operation were yet to be disclosed at the time of filing this report, the announcement marked the end of weeks of anxiety for the victims’ families, the affected communities and the state.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15 when heavily armed gunmen launched coordinated attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, as well as Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in Ahoro-Esiele, all in Oriire Local Government Area. During the attack, a teacher was killed while several pupils, students and school personnel, including school administrators, were taken away into a nearby forest.
The abduction sparked widespread outrage across the country and prompted a joint security operation involving the police, military, local hunters and other security outfits. Authorities repeatedly assured the public that efforts were underway to secure the victims’ release, even as they dismissed several false reports claiming the abductees had already been rescued.
The incident also forced the temporary closure of schools in parts of Oyo State as the government sought to protect pupils and restore confidence in the security of educational institutions.
With the successful rescue of all the abducted pupils and teachers, attention is now expected to shift to their medical evaluation, psychological rehabilitation and reunion with their families, while security agencies continue efforts to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
