President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo (Kola) Oseni, describing him as a trusted ally, brother, and one of the architects of Nigeria’s democratic struggle whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.

In a statement issued by the State House on Friday, the President said he received news of Oseni’s death with “a heavy heart and deep sadness,” noting that although he was gone, the memories they shared and his enduring legacy would never be forgotten.

Tinubu described the late Oseni as “a visionary administrator, an elder statesman, a progressive politician and a trailblazer,” whose leadership, vision and commitment to public service distinguished him throughout his lifetime.

He recalled Oseni’s role as organising secretary of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in Lagos during the Second Republic, saying his contributions helped lay the foundation for the establishment of the Lagos State Printing Corporation, where a central mosque was recently dedicated in his honour.

Reflecting on their personal relationship, Tinubu said Oseni was more than a political associate, describing him as “a leader, my ally, my comrade, a friend and a brother rolled into one.”

The President revealed that Oseni played a pivotal role in his political career, bringing him into politics and standing by him as he became the senator representing Lagos West and later governor of Lagos State.

Tinubu also remembered their joint efforts during the pro-democracy struggle, saying they fought together to defend the mandate of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Bashorun Moshood Abiola and worked to end military rule in Nigeria.

“Kola Oseni was a warrior for democracy. He believed in the ideals of democracy and good governance and fought for them,” the President said.

He further disclosed that before the 2023 presidential election, Oseni had blessed his presidential ambition and offered prayers, although he was unable to participate actively because he had relocated to the United States.

According to Tinubu, his administration is implementing some of the ideas and reforms they had discussed over the years in a bid to build a stronger and better Nigeria.

Describing Oseni’s death as the loss of “an Iroko among us,” the President thanked him for his service to Lagos State and Nigeria and praised the values he lived for.

Tinubu prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest in Aljanna and asked God to comfort and strengthen his wife, children and the entire family as they mourn his passing.

The tribute, signed by President Tinubu and dated July 3, 2026, concluded with prayers from the President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for the peaceful repose of the late elder statesman.
