Nigeria is in mourning following reports that retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and one-time spokesperson of the Nigerian Armed Forces, has died while being held by bandits.

The retired senior military officer and his wife were abducted in late May along the Matazu axis of Katsina State while travelling through the area. According to security sources, armed men ambushed their vehicle, abducted the couple, and shot their driver, who later escaped with injuries.

While details surrounding his death remain unclear, reports indicate that the retired general died while still in captivity.

Major General Abubakar was widely respected for his distinguished military career and for his role in defending and communicating Nigeria’s military operations during critical security periods.

His reported death has sparked renewed concern over the worsening insecurity in parts of the country, particularly the growing reach of bandit groups targeting civilians and high-profile figures alike. The abduction had earlier drawn widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger security interventions.

Nigerians have continued to express grief and outrage on social media, describing the development as a tragic reflection of the country’s deepening security challenges.
