United States-based Nigerian journalist and academic, Okey Ndibe, has confirmed his release following a period of detention by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Ndibe disclosed his release in a statement on Monday, expressing gratitude to friends, associates, and supporters who reached out to him after news of his detention became public.

“I am so grateful for the expressions of concern by many friends, acquaintances and others over my detention earlier today by the DSS at Murtala Muhammed International Airport,” he said.

The renowned writer noted that the two DSS operatives who interacted with him during the detention were professional and courteous throughout the more than three hours he spent in custody.

“The two agents who interacted with me were quite courteous throughout the three-plus hours of my detention,” he stated.

Confirming that he had regained his freedom, Ndibe said he had received numerous calls from different parts of the world from people concerned about his welfare.

“Dozens of people have called me from different parts of the world. I was only able to speak to a few. In the coming days, I’ll find time to return more calls,” he said.

The journalist reassured supporters that he was in good condition and remained optimistic despite the incident.

“I want all to know that I am fine and in excellent spirits. I treasure your messages and gestures of friendship,” Ndibe added.

The DSS has yet to issue an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding his detention at the airport.

Ndibe’s brief detention had sparked concern among colleagues, civil society groups, and supporters within and outside Nigeria, many of whom demanded clarification from the authorities before news of his release emerged.
