The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has expressed profound sorrow following a helicopter crash that resulted in the deaths of eight oil workers, including two prominent union leaders.

In a statement from NUPENG President Prince Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union extended condolences to the victims’ families, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), and Arion Energy Services Ltd. They emphasized that this tragedy marks a significant loss for both the oil and gas sector and its workforce.

The Eastwind Aviation helicopter, carrying the eight individuals, crashed into the Bonny River on October 24, 2024, while en route from Port Harcourt Military Base to the FPSO NUIM ANTAN offshore facility.

Among the deceased were Comrade Boris Dorbi, Branch Chairman of NUPENG, and Comrade Lawrence Alu, a respected member of the NUIM Antan Branch. “Their untimely deaths are a devastating blow to the industry and our collective workforce,” the statement noted.

NUPENG praised the recovery efforts undertaken by the governments of Rivers and Akwa Ibom States, the Federal Ministry of Aviation, and other involved agencies. “As we grieve our lost comrades, we stand united in our sorrow and extend our prayers to the bereaved families and all affected by this tragedy,” the union stated.

The organization reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the safety and well-being of its members and the wider community. “May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find strength in this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
