The Anambra chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has initiated an indefinite strike, impacting all private and public hospitals in the state, in response to the abduction of Dr. Stephen Ezeh.
The strike commenced after the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the state government and security agencies.
In a statement signed by the NMA Anambra Chairman, Dr. Princeston Okam, and Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Obiaeli, and made available to the press in Awka, the association outlined its decision.
The statement read: “NMA Anambra directs all doctors in the state to immediately withdraw clinical services from all Federal, State, Private, Mission, Institutional, and Corporate hospitals in the state until our member is released.
“The NMA Anambra will rigorously monitor compliance with this directive through its ‘Strike Monitoring Team,’ and any non-compliant hospitals or members will be blacklisted or penalized in accordance with congress resolutions.
“The Anambra State government must deploy all necessary security agencies and resources to ensure the timely and unconditional release of our abducted member.
“While NMA Anambra is aware of the difficulties this service withdrawal may cause the people of Anambra, we urge the State government to act swiftly to secure our colleague’s release and restore normalcy to the healthcare system.
“The NMA Anambra leadership will continue to collaborate with relevant government agencies to achieve a healthy and secure population.”
The association also acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and his Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, in enhancing healthcare delivery and security in the state. Furthermore, the NMA commended the doctors for their dedication and commitment to providing quality healthcare to the people of Anambra.
