Mikel Arteta’s side hosted United with their minds surely going back to earlier in the season when Erik ten Hag’s men inflicted their only defeat of the season so far.
With just five minutes gone United thought they had a shout for a penalty as Bruno Fernandes seemed to be pushed by Aaron Ramsdale in the area. The referee though, waved play on despite the protestations.
The visitors eventually did get their goal on 17 minutes as Marcus Rashford continued his stunning form with a superb strike from the edge of the area.
But their lead didn’t last long as Eddie Nketiah tapped in for an equaliser on 23 minutes.
It wasn’t so long ago that a game between these sides was an entree to the main course elsewhere but going into the final minutes of the first half, it was clear that this is, once again, a blockbuster Premier League fixture.
Anything Rashford could do in the first half Bukayo Saka could do better in the second as the Arsenal youngster scored a genuinely world class goal on 53 minutes.
Saka cut in from the left, took a touch and then fired one in past David De Gea from 25 yards.
That lead lasted just six minutes however as Lisandro Martinez headed in from a corner.
Arteta’s side kept pushing for another goal though and hit the post on 70 minutes as Saka’s deflected shot clipped the woodwork.
They would get their winner in the very last minute as Nketiah ghosted into the penalty area and tapped in.
