FIDA Calls For Legal Framework To Back Women’s Participation In Politics”

The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Kogi State branch, has called for a Legal framework to back women participation in politics.

The FIDA Chairperson in Kogi, Lilian Okolo, made the call at a town hall meeting organised to mark ”International Women Day (IWD) 2022,” with the theme: “Gender Equality Today For A Sustainable Tomorrow”.

She also ejoined women to develop themselves, build their emotional intelligence and be self confident to have a sustainable tomorrow, admonishing them to support their fellow women in politics.

She further emphasised the need to mentoring the younger generation to boost their self confidence and emotional intelligence.

She expressed FIDA’s displeasure over the rejection of the five Gender Bills, describing the lawmakers’ action as an affront on Nigeria’s democracy, saying it came to women as a ‘big shock’.

She maintained that the society is aware that “when a woman gets into a position of leadership, she leaves big shoes for the person coming behind to wear”.

The event was attended by a good number of participants amongst which were women in politics, CSOs, female Lawyers and other invited guests.

There was also a session for discussion at the meeting on ”the Prospects of Women Participation in Politics as well as the Challenges Confronting them.

The Panelists included: FIDA members such as Barr. Janet Makun, a Pioneer chairperson of FIDA Kogi, The O.C Legal, Barr. Saidat Musa; the Chairperson, Barr. Lilian Okolo, as well as a male guest, Mr.Ibukun Ajayi.

The panelists applauded the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, for giving women more opportunities in politics and governance, describing him as a gender sensitive govenor.

They, however enjoined the governor to solidify the great feat by leaving a legal framework to ensure its continuity.

Other participants included, women caterers n politics, Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) to the Governor on Culture, Tourisms, Pensions Matters, Women Affairs, and some women vice Chairmen.
