The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mallam Nasiru Marafa, has been shot dead while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
The university announced his death in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi.
NOUN said Marafa was attacked and shot while on his way back from Gusau, but did not disclose the exact location of the incident or provide details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The university expressed shock over the death, describing Marafa as a dedicated administrator who served in various positions of responsibility during his career.
“The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff and Students of the National Open University of Nigeria regrets to announce the sudden and untimely passing of the University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Marafa,” the statement said.
According to the institution, Marafa was appointed Bursar in September 2026 and assumed the position with a strong commitment to his responsibilities and the advancement of the university.
His death has plunged the NOUN community into mourning, with the university describing him as a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the institution.
NOUN extended its condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others affected by his death.
The university said details of his burial arrangements would be announced after consultations with and the release of information by the family.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official information on the identity of the attackers, the motive for the shooting, or whether security agencies had made any arrests in connection with the incident.
