Ugwuanyi sets Up committee to give education face lift in Enugu

In pursuance of his campaign promise to give education a face lift in
the state, the governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi,
has set up a committee to investigate condition of schools facilities
in the state for possible upgrade.

This was contained in an address delivered on his behalf at Michael
Okpara Square by the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze
to mark the Teachers’ Day celebration in the state.

Governor Ugwuanyi also commended the immeasurable roles teachers play
in the development of the nation, pointing out that the world
Teachers’ Day was observed first in 1993 in recognition of teachers
priceless contribution to the development of humanity.

Also speaking during the event, the National President of the teachers
union, Comrade Michael Alogha Olukoya, represented by Dr. John Okey
Joseph thanked the government of Enugu State for making education a
top priority. He also used the medium to appeal to Enugu state
government to review the retirement age of primary and secondary
school teachers from 60 to 65 years and their service years from 35 to
40 years, adding that the measures had been granted to workers of
different professions across the nation.

The union further advocated for training and re-training of staff in
order to add value to their work and enhance their role of character
building of students that would compete favourable with their
colleagues world-wide.

The president further charged teachers in the state to continue their
support for Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration which according him,
had identified with them by making them the first point of call in his
fact finding inspections.

The highlight of the event was the march past by teachers from the 17
local government areas of the state of which Enugu East local
government emerged victorious.
