Liverpool produced a thrilling comeback to defeat Villarreal 4-3 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, recovering from a two-goal deficit to maintain their perfect start to the European campaign.
The Reds struggled in the opening stages at Anfield but rallied through goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Araujo and Florian Wirtz before Mac Allister completed his brace. Villarreal’s late response through Oluwaseyi set up a tense finish, but Liverpool held on for all three points.
Villarreal took the lead in the fourth minute after Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk made a costly error with a poor header that allowed Mikautadze to capitalise and put the visitors ahead.
The Spanish side doubled their advantage in the 29th minute when Cardona raced through the Liverpool defence following a slick attacking move and finished confidently.
Facing the prospect of a difficult evening, Liverpool responded in the 36th minute. Mac Allister rose to meet Kostas Tsimikas’ corner from the right and headed home to reduce the deficit.
The hosts continued to press and drew level in stoppage time at the end of the first half when Araujo found space behind Cardona and finished to make it 2-2.
Liverpool returned for the second half with greater purpose, and their attacking improvements soon paid off.
Mac Allister completed the turnaround in the 65th minute, finishing after impressive wing play from teenage winger Rio Ngumoha, whose pace and dribbling caused Villarreal repeated problems.
Three minutes later, Florian Wirtz extended Liverpool’s lead with a low left-footed finish, putting the hosts 4-2 ahead and seemingly placing the result beyond the visitors.
However, Villarreal refused to surrender and reduced the deficit in the 87th minute through Oluwaseyi, setting up a nervous closing period at Anfield.
Liverpool survived the late pressure to secure a memorable victory and record their third win in three Champions League matches.
Ngumoha was one of the standout performers, earning praise for his direct attacking play and contribution to Liverpool’s comeback. Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge described the youngster’s ability on the ball as a natural gift that could not easily be taught.
Speaking after the match, Ngumoha said Liverpool had maintained their belief despite falling two goals behind, adding that the team’s mentality had been crucial to the victory.
Mac Allister also praised the teenager’s contribution, highlighting his work rate and quality in possession.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola acknowledged that his team had performed better in the second half after struggling before the break. He warned that his players could not afford to relax against quality opposition, even when holding a two-goal advantage.
The result marked Liverpool’s first Champions League victory after trailing by two or more goals since their 3-2 comeback win over Villarreal in May 2022.
With three wins from three matches, Liverpool maintained their perfect record in the competition, although the late scare underlined the need for greater defensive concentration.
