Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has received a timely boost from his substitutes, whose contributions have helped the Gunners secure victories over Leeds United and Lille following the international break.

The north London side have increasingly benefited from their squad depth this season, with Arteta’s tactical adjustments and changes during matches proving crucial in turning difficult encounters in their favour.

Against Leeds at the weekend, Arsenal struggled against their opponents’ defensive organisation and counterattacking approach. Leeds took the lead early in the second half, forcing Arteta to make a triple substitution in search of a response.

Arsenal had equalised shortly before the changes, but the introduction of Bruno Guimarães proved decisive. His energy and technical quality helped the Gunners take control of the contest before he scored the winning goal following an impressive attacking move.

Three days later, Arteta again turned to his bench to change the course of a match, this time against French side Lille in the UEFA Champions League.

After a sluggish first half, the Arsenal manager introduced Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz. The changes injected fresh energy into the team and helped Arsenal secure a convincing 3-0 victory.

The performances underline the importance of squad depth, an area Arteta and the club’s hierarchy have prioritised in recent seasons.

While Arsenal previously relied heavily on rotation to maintain performance levels across competitions, their substitutes are now making increasingly significant contributions during matches.

Players such as Guimarães, Saka, Ødegaard and Havertz give Arteta valuable options when the starting team struggles to break down opponents. Their technical ability and tactical versatility could prove decisive in a campaign where small margins often determine results.

Arsenal’s ability to find solutions beyond set pieces is another encouraging development. Arteta’s capacity to adjust his tactics and introduce players capable of changing a game could help the team maintain consistency throughout the season.

However, questions remain over the club’s options on the left wing.

Noni Madueke impressed against Leeds, operating on the left and keeping his game relatively simple by stretching the opposition defence, staying close to the touchline and delivering crosses into the penalty area.

His performance suggested he could offer Arsenal a useful alternative in that position.

Against Lille, however, Madueke returned to the right wing, where his final delivery was less effective. Eberechi Eze started on the left but struggled to influence the match consistently, although he contributed Arsenal’s second goal.

Arteta therefore still faces a decision over his preferred left-wing option. Nevertheless, the variety of attacking players available gives him flexibility as he searches for the right combination.

Arsenal will next travel to face Nottingham Forest on Sunday at 4:30 p.m., aiming to record a third consecutive victory.

The fixture presents a fresh challenge, as the Gunners have found away matches against Forest difficult since the latter’s return to the Premier League. Arsenal’s record includes one victory, two goalless draws and one defeat.

Arteta will be hoping for a stronger overall performance and may once again look to his substitutes to provide the decisive contribution as Arsenal pursue another three points.
