A Reform UK councillor in Sunderland has been charged over an allegedly grossly offensive social media post that referenced the Nigerian community.
Glenn Gibbins, a councillor with Sunderland City Council, was charged under the UK’s Communications Act 2003 in connection with a post he made in 2024.
The 66-year-old had previously been investigated by Reform UK over the post and was issued a final written warning by the party.
In a statement, Northumbria Police said it was aware of the significant public interest surrounding the case and urged members of the public not to speculate either online or within the community while legal proceedings are ongoing.
Police said Gibbins, who is from the Sunderland area, is scheduled to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court next month.
Responding to the development, a Reform UK spokesperson said the party was aware of the charge involving Councillor Gibbins and would closely monitor the outcome of the court proceedings.
