Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ghana 1-0 in a hard-fought Round of 32 clash in Kansas City on Friday.
Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, calmly converting a pinpoint cross from substitute Luis Suarez after striker Jhon Cordoba was forced off early with an apparent groin injury.
The South Americans, managed by Nestor Lorenzo, produced another disciplined performance to extend their unbeaten run in the tournament and secure a last-16 showdown with Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver.
Colombia, who topped Group K ahead of Portugal, Uzbekistan and DR Congo, controlled much of the contest and looked comfortable throughout. Luis Diaz came close to adding a second goal, hitting the side netting before seeing another effort ruled out for offside early in the second half.
Despite the defeat, Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi delivered an outstanding performance, making a series of impressive saves late in the match to keep his side in contention.
Backed by a sea of yellow-clad supporters who turned the Kansas City Stadium into a virtual home venue, Colombia dominated possession and limited Ghana’s attacking opportunities. Antoine Semenyo was Ghana’s main threat, but Colombia’s organised defence denied him any clear chances.
The victory makes Colombia the fourth South American nation to reach the World Cup Round of 16, joining Argentina, Brazil and surprise package Paraguay.
Colombia’s best-ever World Cup finish remains a quarter-final appearance in 2014, and they will now aim to equal or surpass that achievement when they face Switzerland in the next round.
