What began as a disturbing social media video has culminated in the remand of an Anambra couple accused of brutally abusing a 10-year-old boy under their care.
The Anambra State Police Command said it secured a court order remanding Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and his wife, Chisom Chukwuyere, 30, in a correctional facility pending further proceedings over allegations that they subjected the child, identified as Chiziterem, to severe abuse.
The case sparked widespread outrage after a video showing the boy with extensive burns and injuries across his body circulated online, drawing public attention to his plight and prompting swift intervention by authorities.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspects were arraigned after investigators concluded preliminary inquiries into the matter.
“The suspects were arraigned in court following the conclusion of preliminary investigations into the case, which attracted public concern after reports and video footage of the victim surfaced on social media,” Ikenga said in a statement on Thursday.
The command credited residents of the area for helping to expose the alleged abuse, describing their vigilance and cooperation as instrumental in rescuing the child and ensuring he received urgent medical care.
According to police, the boy is currently under state protection and receiving treatment for injuries allegedly inflicted by his guardians at their residence in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The case has become a striking example of how digital exposure and community action can help uncover abuse that might otherwise remain hidden behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, Anambra State First Lady, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has continued to monitor the boy’s recovery. During a recent visit to the hospital, she expressed satisfaction with his progress after receiving assurances from medical personnel that his condition was stable.
Police said investigations and legal proceedings are ongoing, stressing the command’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children and ensuring justice is served.
