Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, paving the way for southern aspirants, including former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to contest under the party’s platform.
The decision was reached on Saturday during the maiden National Convention of the party held in Abuja.
The motion was moved by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly, Afam Victor Ogene, and was overwhelmingly adopted by delegates at the convention.
Delegates also resolved that after the completion of the single four-year tenure by a southern candidate, the party’s presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria.
The development is seen as a major political breakthrough for southern aspirants within the party and is expected to intensify preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.
