A middle-aged man identified as Atiku Abubakar has been arrested alongside two others following a highway robbery incident in Ondo State.
The Ondo State Police Command disclosed that the suspects were apprehended after a swift response to a distress call on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at about 5:20 a.m. The incident occurred between Ita-Oba and Oboto along Ondo Road.
According to the police, a commercial vehicle travelling from Ondo to Akure with five passengers was ambushed by armed robbers. The victims were forcefully taken into the bush, where the assailants dispossessed them of their personal belongings.
The victims were identified as Sunday Omodele (63), Osedimilehin Peter (29), Osedimilehin Ifeoluwa (18), Osedimilehin Florence (56), and Ademola Regina.
Security operatives, working in collaboration with the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, launched a targeted operation that led to the safe rescue of all five victims without injuries.
During the operation, three suspects were arrested. They include Akinyemi Olamilekan, Mutaka Ali, and Atiku Abubakar. Police authorities confirmed that the suspects have made useful statements aiding ongoing investigations and will be charged to court upon conclusion.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of commuters and residents, noting that routine patrols, intelligence-led operations, and rapid response strategies remain in place to curb criminal activities along major routes.
Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies to enhance public safety.
