Three men have died in a tragic incident at Aminigboko community in Abua/Odual, Rivers State, after entering a dry well suspected to contain harmful gas.
The victims reportedly went into the well while attempting to deepen it to improve access to water. According to eyewitness accounts, the first man descended into the well using a locally made ladder but did not respond after entering. A second man who went down in an attempt to rescue him also failed to return.
A third man, who was not initially engaged for the task, reportedly entered the well in a desperate rescue attempt despite warnings from onlookers. He also lost his life.
Residents said the well had been emitting an offensive odour prior to the incident, raising suspicions that toxic gas may have accumulated inside. The exact cause of the deaths has not yet been officially confirmed.
Community members have called on relevant authorities and safety experts to investigate the incident and determine whether hazardous gases may pose further risks to residents.
The remains of the deceased have been recovered, as the community mourns the tragic loss.
