A driver has lost his life following a collision involving two heavy-duty trailers on Otedola Bridge, inward Secretariat, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa.
According to Giwa, the crash involved a sand-laden trailer and another conveying granite, reportedly caused by a reckless struggle for right of way. The impact trapped the driver of the sand-laden truck, who sustained fatal injuries.
LASTMA rescue operatives swiftly responded and extricated the trapped driver, who was handed over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). He was taken to the General Hospital, Ikeja, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the second trailer was rescued alive and escaped unhurt.
In a related development, another trailer fully loaded with flour reportedly overturned about 50 metres from the primary crash site, worsening traffic congestion along the corridor.
Giwa said the combined incidents obstructed nearly 80 per cent of the carriageway, prompting extensive traffic control and diversion measures. Security personnel from the Alausa Police Division were deployed to maintain order and ensure public safety.
Motorists travelling into Lagos from the Mowe, Kara Bridge and Redemption Camp axis were redirected through the Ojodu–Olole route, connecting Agidingbi, Coca-Cola, Secretariat and 7-Up, to ease movement toward Gbagada and Ojota.
Giwa urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and exercise mutual courtesy on the roads to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
