President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a glowing tribute to elder statesman and former Osun State governor, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marked his 87th birthday on January 16, 2026, describing him as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic journey and a foundational figure in the country’s progressive politics.
In a statement released by the State House, the President praised Chief Akande’s lifelong contributions to national development, democratic governance, and the growth of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he served as the party’s first interim national chairman.
President Tinubu recalled that Chief Akande’s political career was inspired by the vision and ideology of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He noted that Akande began his professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum before leaving the private sector for public service—a decision that defined his enduring commitment to nation-building.
According to the President, Akande’s rise through public office was marked by distinction, having served as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and later Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.
Tinubu highlighted Akande’s pivotal role in the formation and consolidation of the APC, noting that as interim chairman, he laid the groundwork for the political movement that achieved a historic victory in 2015 by unseating an incumbent federal government for the first time in Nigeria’s history.
The President commended Akande for his leadership, integrity, honesty, and unwavering belief in democratic values, describing him as a mentor whose counsel and encouragement were instrumental to his own political journey and eventual emergence as President.
He also acknowledged Akande’s continued support for the current administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that his partnership and alliance have been of immense value.
President Tinubu noted that even at 87, Chief Akande remains energetic and steadfast in his advocacy for democracy, social justice, and good governance.
As the elder statesman marks his birthday, the President prayed for his continued good health and renewed strength, celebrating him as a symbol of dedication, wisdom, and service to the nation.
