Twelve people have been confirmed dead while two others sustained injuries in a road accident that occurred on Friday night along the Ejule–Enugu highway in Kogi State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the crash happened at about 11:30 p.m. at Iboko community in Idah Local Government Area.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Tenimu Etuku, who confirmed the incident on Saturday in Lokoja, described the accident as “fatal and very unfortunate,” adding that one of the victims was a child.
According to him, the accident involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Romchi Mass Transit, which was travelling from Abuja to the eastern part of the country.
Etuku explained that the bus rammed into a parked articulated vehicle that had broken down along the highway, attributing the crash to excessive speed.
He said FRSC rescue operatives promptly responded to the scene, evacuating the injured victims to Mercy of Jesus Hospital, Ejule, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in a morgue.
The sector commander expressed condolences to the families of the victims and warned motorists against speeding and reckless driving, especially during the yuletide season.
He urged drivers to obey traffic rules, exercise patience, and maintain safe driving practices to reduce the growing rate of road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.
