The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has accused Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga of spreading false claims about the former Labour Party presidential candidate, describing his recent remarks as an attempt to divert public attention from the government’s failures.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by POMR spokesperson Ibrahim Umar, the group reacted to Onanuga’s assertion that the Federal Government would “not forgive” Peter Obi for allegedly inviting former U.S. President Donald Trump into Nigeria’s political affairs. POMR dismissed the allegation as baseless, insisting that global interest in Nigeria’s situation has “nothing to do with” Obi.

The media group said the comments from the presidential aide were “misguided,” adding that they were targeted at shifting focus from the administration’s inability to address key national challenges.

“This administration appears unable to free itself from constant thoughts of Peter Obi—and their anxiety is understandable,” the statement read. “Onanuga’s distortions are desperate attempts to divert attention from failures in governance.”

According to POMR, Onanuga has repeatedly misinterpreted his role as Presidential Spokesperson, using his office to constantly criticise Obi instead of addressing pressing issues affecting Nigerians. The group accused the government of prioritising politics over governance, alleging that insecurity, rising food prices, corruption, and worsening living conditions have continued unchecked.

“It is now an established pattern: when a government lacks a plan for the future, it resorts to lies about the opposition to shift attention,” the group said.

POMR added that while Onanuga is “daydreaming” about Obi, the former Anambra State Governor remains focused on issues of national importance, engaging with global stakeholders and supporting poor communities “abandoned by the government.”

The group described Onanuga’s remarks as “political disinformation” intended to mislead Nigerians and distort Obi’s image.

POMR urged the public to disregard the statements credited to the presidential spokesperson and remain focused on what it called “the journey toward a new Nigeria.”

The statement was signed by Ibrahim Umar, POMR spokesperson, and dated November 26, 2025.
