A police inspector in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has been arrested for allegedly brutalizing his three children over accusations of witchcraft.
The officer, identified simply as John and attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit in Igbogene, was taken into custody after neighbours alerted the state security patrol team, Doo Akpor, which rescued the children and rushed them to a hospital.
The children are currently receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the National Association of Women Against Gender-Based Violence, and the Do Foundation. The groups have petitioned the police and initiated a case of criminal assault and attempted murder against the officer at Akenfa Police Station.
The Bayelsa State Ministry of Women Affairs has also intervened, with officials visiting both the police station and the hospital to follow up on the case.
According to Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, one of the advocates involved, the State Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the police headquarters for thorough investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Muhammed, confirmed the arrest but said further details were still being compiled.
