Tension has once again gripped Rivers State as security personnel attached to the outgoing Sole Administrator of the Government House, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (Rtd), openly rebelled against him just days before Governor Siminalayi Fubara is set to resume office following his suspension.
The officers, who have been responsible for the day-to-day security of the State’s seat of power, reportedly accused Ibas of maltreatment and neglect over the past six months. Their revolt marks yet another dramatic twist in the ongoing political crisis that has divided Rivers State.
The crisis began shortly after Governor Fubara assumed office in 2023, as a rift with his predecessor, former Governor Nyesom Wike—now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory—escalated into a full-blown battle for control of the state’s political structure. The feud triggered factional loyalties within the State House of Assembly, the cabinet, and even security agencies, leading to months of instability.
Vice Admiral Ibas, a retired Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed as Sole Administrator to manage the Government House during the period of Fubara’s suspension. However, insiders claim his leadership style alienated staff and security officers, culminating in the current mutiny.
Observers say the rebellion underscores the deepening cracks in Rivers State’s governance and may complicate Governor Fubara’s expected return. Political analysts warn that unless reconciliation is achieved between the governor and his predecessor, Rivers could remain a flashpoint of political unrest in the Niger Delta.
