A heavy downpour on Thursday wreaked havoc across several communities in Zaria, Kaduna State, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. More than 270 households were affected, with over 470 children displaced.
An assessment conducted by a joint response team—comprising the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Director of Emergency and Security Services, and the Deputy Director of Welfare—confirmed extensive damage and urgent humanitarian needs.
The team, led by the Chairman of Zaria Local Government Area, Alhaji Jamil Ahmad Muhammad Jaga, visited Kofar Kuyanbana to inspect the devastation. Areas hardest hit include Gangaren Mobil and Bayan Cinema in Tudun Wada Ward, as well as Magume, Bako Zuntu, and Kamacha in Tukur Tukur Ward.
Floodwaters swept through homes, destroying food supplies, clothing, electronics, and other household essentials, leaving hundreds of families stranded and vulnerable.
Authorities expressed relief that, despite the scale of destruction, no lives were lost—an outcome they described as a mark of divine mercy.
In the wake of the disaster, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Zaria Division, has begun distributing relief materials to affected families. The organization has also appealed for urgent intervention from government agencies, private philanthropists, and humanitarian groups to provide food, shelter, and medical support for victims.
