A group of Rivers State indigenes has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to halt the local government election scheduled for August 30.
The defendants are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rivers State Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1144/2025, the plaintiffs — Fredrick Ededeh, Benita Samuel, Jane Madubuike, Boma Aggo, and Comfort Agbom — argue that the state’s current security situation, under a declared state of emergency, is unsuitable for holding elections.
They cited President Tinubu’s own statement when declaring the emergency, in which he noted a “clear and present danger” to public order, peace, and good governance in Rivers State.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to determine whether an election can be lawfully conducted under such conditions.
