Peter Obi, former presidential candidate and prominent Nigerian political figure, expressed concerns over the recent increase in the Budget of Restoration to ₦54 trillion, which was attributed to higher-than-expected revenue generation. While the sources of the increased revenue were highlighted, Obi pointed out the absence of a detailed breakdown of how these funds would be allocated, calling for transparency in government spending.

Obi who stated this in a statement on Friday, stressed that Nigerians deserve to know how the resources generated from their contributions are being spent, particularly in critical areas such as education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation. He argued that these sectors should receive significant attention to ensure the country’s development and improve the welfare of its citizens.

In addition, Obi reiterated the need for a thorough account of the execution and expenditures of the Renewed Hope budget passed in December 2023. He emphasized that it is essential for the government to demonstrate that these funds have been effectively used to foster the nation’s growth and improve the lives of the people.

The former Anambra State governor called on the National Assembly to use this opportunity to publicly demand the full details of the 2024 Renewed Hope budget, ensuring transparency and accountability in the allocation and usage of national resources.

“As we work towards passing the Budget of Restoration for 2025, let us uphold openness, accountability, and the welfare of the Nigerian people. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and the future of our great nation,” Obi concluded.

This call for transparency echoes widespread demands from various sectors of Nigerian society for more oversight of national budgets and expenditure, especially in a time of rising public interest in governmental accountability and the proper management of public funds.
