Hensard University Welcomes Renowned Film Scholar As Dean Of Communication & Media Studies

Hensard University, a fast growing private institution in Bayelsa State, today named Professor Femi Okiremuette Shaka Dean of the Faculty of Communication & Media Studies.

The appointment provides a significant boost to the faculty by bringing in a prominent figure in Nigerian film studies and scholarship.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dileep Kumar M., along with faculty members Dr. Thomas Terna and Dr. Cookey Ogechi, formally welcomed Professor Shaka, who previously worked in the Department of Film & Multimedia at the University of Port Harcourt.

The ceremony, while understated, emphasised the university’s dedication to academic excellence and its ambitious growth strategy in communication and media.

Professor Kumar expressed his excitement about Professor Shaka’s arrival, emphasising the transformative impact he anticipates the new Dean will have on the faculty.

“Professor Shaka’s extensive experience and profound contributions to the field of film studies will undoubtedly raise the quality of our programs and research,” Professor Kumar said in a press release.

“His leadership will propel our faculty to new levels of academic excellence and industry relevance.”

Professor Shaka’s appointment coincides with the generous donation of two of his highly acclaimed textbooks to the university library.

“Nollywood Nation: Industry Practice and Scholarship of Cinema in Nigeria” and “Fundamentals of Film Making, Theory and Practice.”

These texts, which are already required reading for students of Nigerian cinema and filmmaking, provide invaluable resources for Hensard University students.

Professor Shaka’s books demonstrate a tangible commitment to the institution’s academic enrichment.

Dr. Terna and Dr. Ogechi, both senior lecturers in the faculty, expressed their enthusiasm for the opportunity to collaborate with Professor Shaka.

They emphasised his reputation for innovative teaching methods and impactful research, implying that his leadership will spark a new surge of creative energy and critical thinking in the department.

Professor Shaka’s research focuses on the sociocultural impact of Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry. His publications have been widely cited, and he frequently speaks at international film and media conferences.
