The death toll from the petrol tanker explosion in Niger State has now reached 70. The tragic incident occurred today when a tanker overturned, spilling fuel, and leading to an explosion that resulted in widespread destruction.

Kumar Tsukwam, the head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, confirmed the updated toll, saying, “The death toll stands at 70 so far.” He identified the location of the accident as Dikko-Maje Road, near the Badeggi Fuelling Station in Suleja Local Government Area.

The majority of the victims were local youths and some women. In addition to the fatalities, several others sustained injuries, and numerous houses and shops were completely destroyed by the ensuing fire.

An eyewitness described how the accident unfolded: a petrol tanker overturned, prompting the arrival of a second tanker to transfer the spilled fuel. As the transfer began, people—mainly youths and women—rushed to the scene to scoop up the fuel.

“While they were scooping, there was a loud explosion that ignited a fierce fire, engulfing both the vehicles and many of the people at the scene,” the eyewitness recounted. “Most of the victims were youths who ignored warnings about the dangers of handling the spilled fuel, and many were trapped and burned beyond recognition.”

Reports also indicated that residents in the area were unable to help, as there was no immediate response from the fire service to contain the blaze.

The Sector Commander of FRSC in Niger, Tsukwam, confirmed the incident and stated that he was still compiling a full report.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed his shock and sorrow over the explosion. In a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor called the incident “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.” He extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged the public to prioritize safety. Additionally, the governor instructed relevant authorities to take necessary actions, while advising security forces to ensure safety in the area.
