As a concerned citizen of Imo State, I am writing to express my thoughts on your governance style since your re-election. While I acknowledge your efforts to lead our state, I strongly believe that your frequent absence from Imo State is a cause for concern. Your decision to govern from Abuja has raised eyebrows among many Imo citizens, who feel that your truancy is denying them the dividends of democracy.
As a leader, your presence is crucial in understanding the needs and challenges of our state. By being physically present, you can engage with stakeholders, listen to their concerns, and make informed decisions that benefit our state. Moreover, governing from a distance can lead to a disconnect between your administration and the people you serve. It may create an environment where decisions are made without considering the local context, leading to policies that might not effectively address our needs.
I understand that your role as the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) may always require your presence in Abuja. However, I urge you to strike a balance between your national responsibilities and your duties as our state governor. Your attention to Imo State’s affairs is crucial in addressing the socio-economic challenges we face.
I’m convinced that you understand the nature of Nigerian politics very well and as one that plays it with deep value; I expect that you should remember that much is expected of you here in Imo State. Imo people love and sincerely need your attention.
The current state of our economy is a pressing concern. The prices of goods and services have skyrocketed, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to make ends meet. Our governor, you have made your position known with regards to the implementation of the new minimum wage of N70, 000. Imo workers are still receiving N40, 000 as minimum wage. Imo people like other Nigerians are suffering; we know you as a man whose lively principles are intertwined with empathy and understanding, kindly respond to the cries of Imo workers. It could interest you to know that with the convoluted economic stance today, the N70, 000 minimum wage may not be able to afford half bag of rice before the end of December 2024. It’s not your fault Your Excellency, but a national problem!
As a leader, it is your responsibility to create an environment that fosters economic growth and development. I implore you to focus on implementing policies that will stimulate our local economy, create jobs, and attract investments.
Governor Uzodimma, I want to emphasize that my intention is not to criticize but to encourage you to take a more active role in governing our state. Your leadership is crucial in shaping the future of Imo State, and I believe that with your commitment, we can overcome the challenges we face. I urge you to reflect on your governance style and consider the impact it has on our state. I hope you will take my concerns seriously and make a conscious effort to be more present and engaged with our state.
As you are aware, your progress report in July 2023 showed that Imo State has become worse in terms of economy, job-creation, GDP, and security during your term as governor. I believe that with your attention and leadership, we can reverse this trend and move our state forward. I would like to suggest that you focus on implementing policies that will address these critical areas and improve the lives of Imo citizens.
The economic condition in Imo State is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention. According to recent studies, unemployment and underemployment have devastating effects on economic development in Imo State. The state’s high level of poverty and unemployment among youths is a ticking time bomb, and the government needs to initiate good pro-poor policies to address these issues.
If only with a view of refreshing your good memory once again, the latest data reveals that Imo State has one of the highest numbers of unemployed youths in Nigeria, with 12.66 million youths aged 15-34 being unemployed. This is a staggering number that requires urgent action from the government to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
In addition to unemployment, Imo State is also rich in natural resources, but the exploitation and utilization of these resources have not translated to economic benefits for the people. The state’s environmental condition is also a concern, and the government needs to take steps to address these issues. We understand your love and concern for the youths of Imo, but we expect you to do more. We don’t expect faultless administration from you, because you are not the Holy Spirit that is perfect but we expect good and meaningful efforts in ameliorating our pains.
To address these challenges, it is essential to bring Imo people together and work towards a common goal of economic development and growth. I appeal to you, Governor Uzodimma, to remember your promise to hand over to Owerri zone and treat it confidentially. I pray for more wisdom and divine protection as you continue to lead us.
Let’s work together to build a better future for Imo State.
Yours sincerely,
Prof. Protus Nathan Uzorma
