The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has refuted claims circulating online that it has formed an alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming governorship election on September 21.

The online report alleged that the alliance was orchestrated by senior party members in collaboration with the presidency.

In response, the State Publicity Secretary of the LP, Sam Uruopa, issued a statement on Thursday dismissing the allegations as baseless and an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata.

The statement read, “We categorically deny these baseless allegations and view them as a desperate attempt to damage Olumide Akpata’s reputation and undermine his candidacy.

“Although we typically disregard such insignificant claims, we find it necessary to clarify the situation for the sake of the public.

“There is no truth to the claim that Akpata has entered into a secret alliance with the APC. Our candidate has consistently upheld his commitment to the Labour Party and its principles.

“We also deny receiving any financial support from the APC or the presidency. Akpata’s campaign is self-funded, supported by loyal party members and followers.

“For the past 25 years, both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party have represented darkness in Nigeria and Edo State. Akpata is a beacon of light with no connection to such darkness. The alleged late-night meetings with APC officials are fabrications. Akpata has been fully focused on his ward-to-ward campaign, engaging with the people of Edo and presenting his vision for the state.

“We categorically deny receiving $850,000 or N1.6 billion, or any funds from the Presidency or APC. Our campaign finances are transparent and accountable.

“Furthermore, there was no manipulation of delegates as the Labour Party conducted one of the most free and fair primaries, devoid of any godfather interference, where Akpata emerged as the clear winner.

“We urge our party members, the Obidient family, and the general public to dismiss these malicious allegations sponsored by the opposition and to remain focused on the important issues. Olumide Akpata is steadfast in his commitment to a better Edo State, and we will not be distracted by baseless rumors and smear campaigns. With Akpata and Kadiri, Edo will be Ok.”
