From Dele Ogunyemi,Ibadan
As Nigerians celebrate the 53rd Independence anniversary, a renowned cleric, Prophet Moses Kasali of the Hour of Mercy, Prayer Ministry (Ori Oke Alaseyori), Ibadan has berated successive leaders in the country, describing them as failures.
Kasali while delivering sermon at the thanksgiving service to mark the end of the year 2013 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council said that the leaders have failed to live up to the expectation of the entire citizens, 53years after Nigeria gained her independence in October 1st, 1960.
He was unsparing of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who he charged to swing into action if he wants to be remembered in the history of the country as somebody who ‘came, saw and conquered’.
The cleric specifically called on President Jonathan not to be afraid in tackling challenges bedevilling the nation in its quest for greatness especially the decay in the polity, corruption and insecurity threatening the nation’s democracy and its peaceful co-existence.
Kasali also used the occasion to decry the way the political class are treating members of the fourth estate of the realm, who he said, have paid their dues in the service of the country and therefore deserved better welfare packages for their lives to be worthy of emulation by other professionals.
He then admonished journalists to exhibit bravery, truthful and consistence in the area of discharging their duties not minding whose ox is gored.
He later went into special prayer session for journalists in the country and sought God’s abiding mercy, unflinching grace and remarkable successes as they go about their duties.
He also assured that every last Sunday of the month of September staring from next year will be set aside as ‘NUJ Prayer day’ by his church all over the world.
The Chairman of the union, Comrade Gbenga Opadotun, thanked God for his protection over all media practitioners and sought the prayers of the men of God for a permanent end to accident and other disasters like that of August 2nd where three NUJ officials lost their lives in a ghastly auto crash in Osu, near Ilesa, Osun state.
He then donated ten ceiling fans on behalf of the NUJ and another ten as his personal donation for God’s mercy over him, therefore making it 20 fans donated to the church.
