A two-time and current World Scrabble Champion, Nigel Richards is one of the participants in this year’s 7th Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics held at Le Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort, Nwaniba.
Governor Godswill Akpabio who received the world scrabble champion together with Pakorn Nemitrmansuk, the current Champion of Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics Thursday when the President of the Nigerian Scrabble Association, Chief Toke Aka and his team paid him a courtesy visit at Governor’s Office, Uyo, formally welcomed them to Akwa Ibom.
“I welcome you to Akwa Ibom. I thank you for developing Quako. Scrabble helps one to think and to develop vocabularies. Anyone involved in scrabble would not engaged in kidnapping and other social vices”, Akpabio remarked.
Assuring to introduce scrabble championship game in secondary schools, he directed the Special Adviser on Youths and Sports to handle the introduction of scrabble game in secondary schools in the state, saying “Scrabble competition needs to be introduced in schools to improve the vocabulary of our children. Scrabble is educative and we need to encourage our children to indulge in always playing the game”.
The Governor congratulated the Nigerian Scrabble President on his effectiveness in taking scrabble game to a greater height in the country, assuring that the state government would continue to support scrabble and wished the participants success in this year’s scrabble competition.
The President of the Nigeria Scrabble Association, Chief Aka disclosed that this year’s competition has about 400 participants, which include 30 foreigners from United Kingdom, United States of America, New Zealand, Thailand, saying that lovers of scrabble around the world would visit the state for the competition.
