Four Nigerian-Americans have reportedly won political positions in the November 3, 2026, United States elections, while a fifth Nigerian-born candidate is leading in a race yet to be officially declared.

The candidates recorded victories in different state and local elections, highlighting the growing participation of Nigerians and people of Nigerian descent in American politics and public service.

Among those who reportedly secured victories is Will Jawando, who defeated Republican candidate Esther Wells in the race for Montgomery County executive in Maryland. Jawando, a Democrat, is the son of a Nigerian father and an American mother.

In Texas, 27-year-old Junior Ezeonu won a seat in the state’s House of Representatives. Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Ezeonu moved to the United States with his family when he was two years old.

Another Nigerian-American who emerged victorious is Oye Owolewa, a pharmacist who won an at-large seat on the Council of the District of Columbia (DC Council).

Owolewa’s parents are from Kwara and Osun states in Nigeria, further highlighting the Nigerian connections of the emerging political figures.

In Pennsylvania, Carol Kazeem also retained her seat in the state’s House of Representatives after defeating Republican challenger Michael Bannon.

Meanwhile, Segun Adeyina, a Nigerian-born Democratic state representative seeking re-election in Georgia’s District 110, was reportedly leading as votes continued to be counted. His contest had yet to be officially called at the time of the report.

The reported performances of the five candidates have drawn attention to the increasing visibility of Nigerians and Nigerian-Americans in political leadership beyond the country’s shores.

Their participation in American politics reflects the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora to governance, public service and democratic institutions.

From Onitsha in Anambra State to political positions in Texas, Maryland, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania and Georgia, the candidates’ performances have been celebrated as a source of pride for Nigeria and its diaspora community.

However, Adeyina’s electoral status remains subject to the final outcome of the vote count and official declaration.
