Barcelona delivered an impressive performance to defeat Aston Villa 3-0 at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night, with Raphinha scoring twice in the second half to secure a comfortable Champions League victory.
The Spanish champions took control early in the encounter, opening the scoring in the seventh minute through teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.
Villa’s goalkeeper, Suzuki, made a costly mistake when his short goal-kick was intercepted by Joao Gomes, whose blind pass across the penalty area fell perfectly to Yamal. The Spain international made no mistake, curling the ball into the far corner for his 13th goal of the season.
Despite falling behind, Unai Emery’s side created several opportunities to restore parity before the break but failed to make them count.
Villa striker Jackson had a promising opportunity after being played through by Manzambi, but Barcelona goalkeeper Garcia intervened to clear the danger.
Anthony Gordon also threatened as the visitors attempted to exploit spaces in Barcelona’s defence, while the hosts had opportunities to extend their advantage.
However, Barcelona emerged from the interval with greater intensity and doubled their lead in the 52nd minute.
Raphinha unleashed an effort from just inside the penalty area, which took a significant deflection before wrong-footing Suzuki and finding the back of the net.
The Brazilian winger struck again in the 64th minute to put the result beyond doubt. Joao Cancelo drove forward down the left flank before delivering an inviting cross with the outside of his boot, allowing Raphinha to complete his brace with a simple finish.
Villa attempted to respond, but their hopes of mounting a comeback were effectively over. Leon Goretzka came close to reducing the deficit in the 69th minute when his header from a corner struck the post.
The victory ended Villa’s three-match winning streak in the Champions League and moved Barcelona above the English side into second place in the league standings.
For Emery, the defeat was particularly disappointing as it came on his 55th birthday and marked a difficult return to his homeland.
Speaking after the match, the Villa manager admitted that his team had failed to take advantage of their first-half opportunities, insisting that clinical finishing was essential at the highest level of European football.
He, however, described the encounter as a valuable learning experience for his young players, despite the disappointing result.
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson also noted that Villa would regret their missed first-half chances, arguing that Barcelona were significantly superior after the break.
The defeat was Villa’s joint-heaviest in major European competition, equalling their previous three-goal losses against Royal Antwerp in 1975 and Inter Milan in 1990.
Villa have also recorded seven errors leading to goals across all competitions this season, the joint-highest tally in the Premier League alongside Sunderland.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will take confidence from an impressive home performance as they strengthen their position in the Champions League standings.
