Presidential candidate on Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has charged Nigerian Editors to insist on issue-based campaigns from office seekers as the only way to ensure free and transparent election in 2027.
Obi, who made the demands at the second day of the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC), taking place in Enugu, further reminded the Editors of their role in building a virile and harmonious society.
While commending the journalists for their role in the development of the country, he asked them to remain focused in the discharge of their duties, conscious of the future of the country.
Obi reiterated the need for a level playing ground for all participants in the election, stressing that any hindrance against any candidate or political party to campaign is against the principle of democracy and tolerance. He sued for a peaceful atmosphere as the election approaches, stressing: “we need a conducive environment to make the country work”
The NDC flag bearer reemphasized his assertion that he did not leave any debt at the end of his tenure as Anambra state governor but bequeathed a huge sum behind for the State. He also ruled out any personal issues with Anambra state governor, Prof Charles Soludo, stressing that he has deep respect for the office of the governor or any other office in the land. He said: “I can’t abuse any person. I don’t have reasons to do so. I give any body his dues”
Obi urged the Editors to do due diligence on the person and antecedents of all the candidates, arguing that the person and character of the leader exemplify the country. He equally asked the journalists to encourage the candidates to speak to the people directly, not through proxies.
He asked elected leaders and politicians in positions to embark on people-oriented projects, focus on the immediate needs of the citizens, not elitist programmes.
