A 43-year-old British-Nigerian businessman and social media influencer, Igho Ubiribo, has died following complications from a penile enlargement procedure he underwent during a holiday in Thailand with his wife.
Ubiribo reportedly died in March after receiving 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at a clinic in Bangkok, according to evidence presented at an inquest at the Inner West London Coroners’ Court.
The Daily Mail reported that Ubiribo developed chest pain and twice lost consciousness while receiving a massage with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen, after the procedure.
He was subsequently rushed by ambulance to Sukhumvit Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a pulmonary embolism—a potentially fatal condition in which a blood clot blocks a blood vessel supplying the lungs.
Ubiribo later lost consciousness before doctors could conduct a recommended CT scan.
Medical personnel reportedly attempted to resuscitate him for more than 100 minutes, but he died in the early hours of March 6.
A postmortem examination conducted in the United Kingdom found cellular material in Ubiribo’s lungs that matched the hyaluronic acid used in the penile filler injection, supporting the diagnosis of a pulmonary embolism.
Coroner Jean Harkin subsequently concluded that Ubiribo died “as the result of a cosmetic procedure abroad,” with the cause of death recorded as pulmonary embolism resulting from the injection of hyaluronic acid into his penis.
Ubiribo, who reportedly had about 185,000 followers on Instagram, was buried in London in May. His funeral was attended by Nigerian music star Davido and other prominent personalities.
Medical experts have previously warned about the potential risks associated with penile filler procedures.
Professor Vaibhav Modgil, an NHS andrology specialist and consultant urological surgeon, reportedly cautioned that such procedures could have devastating consequences for patients.
