President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress to embrace peace, fairness and unity as the party begins its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday from the State House, Tinubu described the commencement of the APC primaries as a “historic moment” for the ruling party as it prepares for its fourth election cycle since its formation.

The President said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice and selflessness, noting that the party must consolidate on those ideals during the primary elections.

According to him, the primaries, which begin with House of Representatives contests on Friday and end with the presidential primary on May 25, are not merely exercises to choose candidates, but a test of the party’s unity, resilience and strength.

Tinubu commended ongoing efforts by party leaders to produce consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, saying the approach would reduce rancour and deepen internal cohesion within the party.

While acknowledging that consensus may not succeed in every contest, the President urged aspirants and delegates to conduct themselves peacefully and demonstrate sportsmanship throughout the exercise.

“In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser,” he said, warning against divisive conduct capable of undermining party unity and democratic values.

He also advised winners not to gloat over victory while urging unsuccessful aspirants to seek redress through party channels rather than resorting to actions that could destabilise the party.

Tinubu further called on governors, party executives and leaders at all levels to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants, stressing that fairness and justice must guide the conduct of the primaries.

The President appealed for greater inclusion of women and youths in the party’s electoral process, describing them as critical demographics that should not be marginalised.

He also directed the police and other security agencies to remain professional during the primaries and limit their roles strictly to maintaining peace and order.

Tinubu wished all aspirants success in the exercise and expressed optimism that the APC would emerge stronger and more united ahead of the general election.
