Manchester United secured a dramatic 3–2 victory over Liverpool to seal qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, with Kobbie Mainoo scoring a superb late winner at Old Trafford.

United made a blistering start, racing into a two-goal lead inside the opening 15 minutes. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring early on, before Benjamin Sesko doubled the advantage, putting the hosts firmly in control and raising hopes of a commanding win over their fierce rivals.

Liverpool struggled to cope with United’s pace and counter-attacking threat in the first half, despite enjoying more possession. However, the visitors staged an unexpected comeback shortly after the break, capitalising on defensive mistakes.

Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back after a misplaced pass, and moments later Cody Gakpo equalised following a costly error from United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

With momentum swinging in Liverpool’s favour, the match appeared headed for a draw. But United found a decisive moment late on when Mainoo struck from the edge of the box, firing a low, powerful shot into the corner to restore the lead and secure all three points.

Liverpool pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to break through, as United held firm to clinch a vital win.

The result not only completes a league double over their rivals but also ensures United’s return to Europe’s elite competition, marking a significant achievement under manager Michael Carrick. For Liverpool, the defeat highlights ongoing struggles, particularly in closing out tight matches this season.
