Senior political heavyweights, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday staged a protest under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), challenging the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its refusal to recognize the party’s leadership led by David Mark.
The protest, spearheaded by the influential politicians, underscores deepening tensions within the ADC over its leadership structure and legitimacy. The leaders accused INEC of failing to acknowledge what they described as the duly constituted leadership of the party, warning that such a stance could undermine internal party democracy.
Addressing supporters during the protest, the political figures insisted that the ADC leadership under David Mark remains lawful and in line with the party’s constitution. They called on INEC to formally recognize the leadership to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
The demonstration highlights broader concerns about party governance and electoral oversight in Nigeria, particularly as political realignments continue ahead of future elections. Observers say the dispute, if unresolved, could affect the ADC’s cohesion and its role in the country’s political landscape.
As of press time, INEC had yet to issue an official response to the protest, leaving uncertainty over the next steps in the standoff between the electoral body and the party’s faction loyal to David Mark.
