The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Davis Offor, widely known for his role as Clarus in the iconic television comedy series New Masquerade.
His passing was announced by his colleague and fellow cast member, Tony Akposheri, who played the character Zaki in the popular show. In an emotional tribute shared shortly after the news broke, Akposheri expressed shock and grief over the loss.
“Davis Offor, fondly known as our own Clarus from New Masquerade, is gone,” he wrote. “We crossed into the New Year together, laughing, talking, sharing memories, and speaking hopefully about the days ahead. We spoke about life, about plans, about how far we had come. None of us knew that time was already counting differently for you.”
Davis Offor rose to prominence through New Masquerade, one of Nigeria’s most beloved television sitcoms, which aired from the 1980s into the early 1990s. The show became a cultural phenomenon, known for its humour, social commentary, and memorable characters. Offor’s portrayal of Clarus—a comic figure known for his wit, mischief, and distinct delivery—earned him nationwide recognition and endeared him to generations of viewers.
Beyond his on-screen presence, Offor was regarded as a seasoned performer who contributed significantly to the growth of Nigerian television drama during its formative years. His work helped shape the country’s entertainment landscape long before the rise of Nollywood as a global force.
Colleagues, fans, and members of the creative community have begun paying tribute, remembering him as a talented actor and a warm personality who brought laughter to millions of homes.
Details surrounding the circumstances of his death have not yet been disclosed.
He is survived by family, friends, and a legacy firmly etched in Nigeria’s television history.
May his soul rest in peace.
