The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite nationwide strike set to begin at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The decision follows the Federal Government’s move to halt the implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table—an agreement reached after the doctors’ 2025 industrial action.

The strike was approved during a virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held on Saturday. In a statement signed by NARD President, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the association described the development as “unfortunate,” accusing the government of forcing doctors back into industrial action.

According to NARD, the revised allowance structure—covering call duty, shift allowances, rural posting incentives, and non-clinical duty payments—was negotiated to improve doctors’ welfare after the prolonged 2025 strike.

Although implementation was initially scheduled for January 2026 and later shifted to February due to delays, the association claims the government now plans to discontinue the process entirely by April. NARD says this decision undermines trust and violates previously reached agreements.

The association has therefore demanded an immediate reversal of the policy and the payment of all outstanding entitlements, warning that failure to act could further disrupt healthcare services nationwide.
