The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the basis for the dates announced for the 2027 General Election, stating that the timetable was drawn strictly in line with constitutional and legal provisions.
In a press statement issued on February 13, 2026, the Commission said the schedule complies with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections introduced in 2019.
According to the guidelines, presidential and National Assembly elections are to be held on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are to take place two weeks later.
Based on this provision, INEC fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
The Commission, however, acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders over the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances.
INEC said it remains sensitive to issues that could affect voter participation and the smooth conduct of the elections. It added that consultations are ongoing and that it may seek legislative intervention if necessary, provided any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and inclusivity, the Commission assured Nigerians that it would keep the public informed of any further developments regarding the 2027 elections.
The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
