President of the Forum of Heads of Local Government Administration in Nigeria, Dr Adewale Adedapo has promised to prioritize training and retraining for its members nationwide.
He told reporters after the forum national executive committee, NEC held in Abuja that training of members was part of the resolutions reached at the meeting.
We need to update knowledge and it’s one of the decisions reached at our meeting.
“We are embarking on training programmes for all admin heads, we are going to get in touch with appropriate authorities to ensure training for us.”
The forum is the machine that runs the local government system.
Dr Adedapo said another area of concern was to harmonise the different names the members are being addressed.
He pointedly said “whatever nomenclature states may be bearing, we are out to harmonise them and be known as heads of local government administration.”
“There is disparity in the names and we are determined to harmonise the different names, they are the heads of administration and that’s what we should be known with. ”
On local government autonomy, the forum president said the essence of autonomy was to reduce tension and encumbrance from the state government.
“If this autonomy is allowed and which should be ordinarily, the chairman of a local government doesn’t have to wait for the governor to construct, roads, provide social amenities. The local government will do these with ease and take the burden off the state government.”
End.
