The Lagos State Government on Sunday sealed the Ladipo Spare Parts Market located along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway over persistent environmental infractions.
The closure followed what authorities described as repeated acts of indiscriminate refuse dumping on the highway median and surrounding roads, as well as illegal street trading that obstructed traffic and posed environmental and safety risks.
Announcing the enforcement action, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said the state would no longer tolerate activities that degrade the environment or undermine public order.
He stressed that the decision was in line with the state’s zero-tolerance policy for environmental abuse, warning that markets, businesses, and individuals who flout environmental laws would face sanctions.
Wahab urged traders and market associations to comply fully with waste management regulations and desist from trading on highways and road medians, noting that such practices endanger lives and damage the city’s infrastructure.
The commissioner added that the market would remain sealed until operators addressed the identified violations and complied with Lagos State environmental laws.
