Former Benue State Governor and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises and the party’s failure to resolve long-standing disputes.

Suswam announced his decision in a resignation letter dated February 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The letter was made public by his Chief of Staff, Moses Ukeyima.

In the letter, the former governor said the PDP had lost its internal cohesion and ideological clarity due to unresolved conflicts affecting its leadership, structure, discipline, and direction.

He acknowledged that the party had provided him with opportunities to serve Nigeria as a member of the House of Representatives, governor, and senator, for which he expressed gratitude. However, he said the party’s continued cycle of internal disputes made it impossible for him to remain.

Suswam noted that repeated reconciliation efforts had failed to restore stability within the party, describing the PDP as an arena of “endless internal warfare.”

According to him, political parties should function as platforms for ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement, ideals he said the PDP no longer represents.

He added that while he was stepping aside, he hoped the party would eventually find the resolve to address its internal contradictions.

As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership had not responded to Suswam’s resignation.
