Oyo acid attack leaves couple dead, three sickle-cell children in crisis

A tragic case of domestic violence has left a husband and wife dead in Akufo, Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State, while their three surviving children battle for survival and care.

The victims, Mr. Lekan Adedeji (49) and Mrs. Zainab Adedeji (44), reportedly died after the man allegedly poured acid on his wife before ingesting the substance himself. The incident ended a marriage of over 25 years marked by repeated domestic disputes, according to family sources.

Relatives said the couple lost three of their six children in the past, unaware they were both carriers of the sickle-cell trait. Their three surviving children—Rashida, Folawe, and Folahanmi—all live with sickle-cell disorder and now require urgent medical and educational support.

Speaking to Vanguard, the deceased woman’s sister, Morufat Ashake, who has taken custody of the children, said the incident occurred after the man allegedly lured his wife home under the pretext of giving money for school fees. She added that despite medical intervention and more than ₦4 million spent on treatment, Mrs. Adedeji later died from her injuries.

The family’s 62-year-old matriarch, Titilayo Ayoola, confirmed that the marriage had been troubled for years and said the family is overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for the children, who require constant medical attention.

The children have appealed for public assistance to help them continue their education and manage their health challenges. Donations can be made to Access Bank account number 1658068176, in the name of Titilayo Iyabo Samukoro.
